Facing Faulkner University (Ala.) for the second time in two weeks, the Georgia Gwinnett softball team dropped a pair of games Thursday on the Eagles’ home field in Montgomery, Ala.
GGC fell in an early hole in game one and despite holding Faulkner scoreless over the final four innings, suffered a 10-2 defeat. In the second game, the Grizzlies (3-5) opened an early lead and the teams went tied into the sixth inning, but two late runs gave the Eagles (3-1) a 4-2 win.
The teams split two close contests on opening day Feb. 9 in Lawrenceville as GGC scored the first win of its inaugural season.
“We definitely battled tonight but we just put ourselves in too big of a hole in the first game,” said Grizzlies head coach Kat Ihlenburg Thursday. “In game two, we built leads but couldn’t come up with outs defensively when we needed them. We put runners on base but just couldn’t put together the string of hits that made the difference.”
Despite the losses, the Grizzlies are averaging nearly six runs per game on the season.
Ihlenburg’s squad is slated to return home on Saturday, hosting Bluefield College and Truett-McConnell College. The Grizzlies are 3-1 in Lawrenceville this season.
