The Georgia Gwinnett women’s soccer team (4-3) dropped a tight 1-0 decision to the Savannah College of Art and Design (5-3) Friday night outside Savannah, Ga., ending the Grizzlies’ three-game winning streak.

The contest remained scoreless for the first 70 minutes before the Bees put away the game’s lone goal.

The loss ends GGC’s streak of three straight shutouts, but the team’s close defeat to a Bees squad receiving votes in the top 25 poll impressed head coach Domenic Martelli.

“I thought it was our best game of the season, by far,” Martelli said. “We played well defensively for the full 90 minutes and that created some good chances for us on offense. We really battled out there and when you look at the effort and everything we did, I was very proud of the team.”

Goalkeeper Mo Gutierrez helped keep GGC close by making several key stops in net.

“We need to use this to get better and now we recover and get ready for Sunday,” Martelli added.

The Grizzlies will trek to Jekyll Island, Ga., for a neutral-site showdown on Sunday with NCAA Division II opponent Palm Beach Atlantic University (3-1) at 1 p.m.
