Despite an even 22-22 mark in shots, the Georgia Gwinnett women’s soccer team dropped a 4-1 decision to Brenau University on Saturday night in Gainesville, Ga., in the team's first road game of the year.

Grizzlies sophomore Mary Vernetti provided the lone GGC score, her third goal of the season, in the defeat.

Golden Tigers leading scorer Esther Anyanwu put away all four goals for BU.

Both teams produced many quality scoring chances. GGC briefly thought it had tied the game early, 1-1, but was whistled for an offsides call.

Later, with GGC down 2-0, Vernetti scored off a pass from junior Valeria de Santiago before halftime as the Grizzlies cut the deficit in half.

Anyanwu put home two more scores in the second period, however, and GGC would fall to 1-2 on their inaugural season. Brenau improved to 3-0.

“We’re learning more about ourselves every day and with every game,” said Grizzlies head coach Domenic Martelli said. “We played well at times tonight and it showed on the field. We just weren’t consistent enough against a team that could finish, so we give them credit.

“Through three games, we’ve learned that when we play well, we can hang with just about anyone,” Martelli added.

The team turns around to host Bluefield College (Va.) on Monday at 11 a.m. on the Grizzly Soccer Field.
