Martin Lugo and Jose Figueroa each scored in the first half as the Georgia Gwinnett men's soccer team earned its third straight win- all shutouts- with a 2-0 victory over Bob Jones University on Saturday on the Grizzly Soccer Field.
The Grizzlies improved to 4-0-1 on the season while the Bruins dropped to 2-2.
Georgia Gwinnett has yielded just one score through the first five games as senior goalkeeper Greg Hartley made four saves Saturday to pitch his fourth shutout.
The Grizzlies outshot the Bruins by a 17-10 mark in the battle of first-year programs.
"Frankly, it wasn't our best performance out there today as we were a little lethargic," said Grizzlies head coach Steve DeCou. "But learning how to win when you aren't playing your best is important and we take it and move on."
Fifteen minutes into the game, midfielder Juan Matute sent a header through to Lugo on a break. Lugo fended off the Bruins defense and beat keeper Jon Sandy with a low strike into the corner as GGC went up, 1-0.
A little over twenty minutes later, the Grizzlies would add to their lead on a corner kick. David Burke swung a ball in that Figueroa won in traffic and headed home for a 2-0 advantage.
Though the Grizzlies wouldn't add to their lead after halftime, Hartley made a few key stops down the stretch to preserve the shutout win.
Lugo now has five goals on the year, second-most on the Grizzly squad, while Figueroa's score was his first of the season.
DeCou's squad returns to action on Wednesday evening, hosting Georgia Southwestern at 7 p.m. on the Grizzly Soccer Field.
