Despite taking an early lead Saturday at Reinhardt University, the Georgia Gwinnett women’s soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to the Lady Eagles in Waleska, Ga.
The Grizzlies’ Amanda Dale scored in the third minute but after Reinhardt leveled things in the first half, Ashley Yarger’s goal in the 87th minute was the game-winner.
Georgia Gwinnett held a 19-16 edge in shots and a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks in the defeat. The loss moves GGC to 6-5-1 on the year while Reinhardt now stands at 6-7-1.
“It’s disappointing and a little confusing to play well in a series of games and then turn around and not get the result we were looking for today against a very good team,” said GGC head coach Domenic Martelli. “Especially after scoring in the first couple of minutes. To give up a late goal and have all of the effort go by the wayside was very unfortunate.”
Dale scored her sixth goal of the year two and a half minutes into the game with assists to Amairani Almanza and Kiley Barrett.
Madi Easterwood tied the game for Reinhardt in the 22nd minute as the teams went tied into halftime.
After a tight second half with many chances for both sides, Yarger put away the winning score with just 3:14 remaining on the clock.
“It’s a little up and down from Tuesday’s (win over Young Harris) and today’s game,” Martelli added. “It makes us realize we have to get back on track and focused so this doesn’t ever happen again.”
Saturday marks the first of five straight road games for the Grizzlies, who return to action Tuesday at Toccoa Falls College at 7 p.m.
