Visiting No. 23-ranked University of the Cumberlands (Kentucky) scored with 16 seconds remaining in the match to defeat the No. 6 Georgia Gwinnett College men's soccer team 1-0 in a rain-soaked contest Saturday night at the Grizzly Soccer Complex.
Conor McVeigh drilled a shot from just outside the 18-yard box into the lower right corner of the GGC goal to net the lone tally of the match.
Saturday's contest was delayed over two-and-a-half hours due to lightning in the Lawrenceville area and then a majority of the match was played in steady course of rain showers.
GGC (4-2-1) attempted five of its six shots during the second half.
Freshman
JJ Grimaldo hit the right goal post with a shot in the 64th minute. Later, sophomore
Luka Colic attempted a shot on goal, but Patriots' goalkeeper Zachary Dean was up to the challenge, making a critical save in the 80th minute.
The hosts registered three corner kicks across the final 10 minutes of the match in hopes of breaking the scoreless duel between nationally ranked foes. A shot by junior
Jean Malilo with 45 seconds remaining was stopped by Dean. That save helped set up McVeigh's final scoring opportunity.
Cumberlands (4-3-1) held a slight 8-6 shot advantage and both teams tallied three corner kicks.
