Top-Ranked Men’s Tennis Improves to 17-0 with Two 5-0 Road Triumphs

The No. 1-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College men's tennis team remains undefeated this spring following a pair of convincing 5-0 victories on Wednesday in matches played at the University of Tennessee Southern in Pulaski, Tennessee.

The Grizzlies began the day against Tennessee Southern before collecting a triumph against Cumberland University (Tennessee). Both opponents received votes in the latest NAIA Top 25 poll, announced by the national office on Wednesday.

Winning 12 of the 13 games across the No. 1 and No. 3 courts, GGC (17-0) quickly won the doubles point during the morning match against the host Firehawks (8-11). Senior Francisco Perez Esnaola teamed with sophomore Gian Durrer to win all six games at the top of the team's lineup. Junior Kanan Gasimov and freshman Luka Vuglar secured the early advantage in the dual match with 6-1 triumph at No. 3 doubles.

Freshman Yerassyl Yerdilda extended the lead to 2-0 in the match with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles. Durrer then collected a 6-0, 6-3 triumph on the No. 4 court.

Gasimov was victorious by identical 6-1 set scores at No. 6 singles before senior Santiago Villarruel recorded a 6-4, 6-0 victory at the top of the singles lineup.

Against Cumberland in the afternoon, the Grizzlies once again grabbed early momentum of the match behind strong doubles play. Senior Juan Carlos Garcia and Yerdilda won six of the seven games on the No. 2 court. Then, the Gasmiov-Vuglar pairing clinched the doubles point with a 6-2 victory on the No. 3 court.

GGC recorded four singles triumphs in straight sets to close out the victory against the Phoenix (6-12). Durrer's opponent was forced to retire due to an injury early in the first set on the No. 4 court. Perez Esnaola gave the Grizzlies a 3-0 lead by winning all 12 games at No. 3 singles.

Villarruel collected a 6-1, 6-1 victory on the No. 1 court and senior Luis Francisco Sampedro was victorious by 6-1, 6-2 scores on the No. 2 court.
