Baseball Flexes Muscles, Scores 23 Runs in Midweek Road Win

The No. 2-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College baseball team scored early and often in picking up a convincing 23-3 victory at Bryan College on Tuesday in Dayton, Tennessee.

The Grizzlies (34-4) smashed four home runs and scored 13 runs during the fourth inning.

Junior right fielder Jay O'Neill connected on a pair of homers, including a first-inning grand slam. Junior left fielder Trey Smith added a two-run home run to start the productive fourth inning. O'Neill followed with a round tripper as the visitors connected on back-to-back homers.

Junior first baseman Jackson Legg supported the power surge with a three-run homer during the third inning to give GGC a 9-1 lead.

The fourth inning's six extra-base hits helped produce 13 runs. A double by Legg plated the final run of the frame. Junior second baseman Payton Fort had an RBI double before junior third baseman JJ Garcia brought home a pair of runs with another double. Junior pinch hitter Chris Tillery also registered an RBI double during the inning. Junior pinch hitter Kyle Phin tallied a run-scoring double before freshman center fielder Vick Gann capped the scoring barrage with another double.

The Grizzlies matched the single-game record with 11 doubles in the midweek triumph and had 21 hits in the contest.

Senior catcher Grant Pohlman went 3-for-4 at the plate and Gann also went 3-for-4 while scoring three times. Fort hit a pair of doubles and drove in two runs in the triumph. O'Neill had five RBI and was 2-for-3. Legg and Tillery each rounded out the team's multiple-hit performers.
 
Coach's Corner
"They went out and played the baseball that we know we are capable of playing. The bats executed well from the first pitch and set a tone for the game that Christian Johnson (starting pitcher) continued for us on the mound. As always, there are things we can continue to get better at but I'm proud of the way the guys showed up to start this week off on the right foot," said Head Coach Tommy Goodale.
 
Turning Point
The Grizzlies flexed their muscles early in Tuesday's road triumph, hitting four home runs across the first four innings. Junior right fielder Jay O'Neill connected on a grand slam to give the visitors a 4-0 lead five batters into the contest. Later, junior left fielder Trey Smith hit a two-run homer to start a 13-run fourth inning. O'Neill followed with his round tripper as the lead grew to 12-1.
