Pitching Teamwork Leads No. 2 Baseball to Shut Out Indiana Tech

Five pitchers combined to record 17 strikeouts as the No. 2-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College baseball team shutout Indiana Tech 6-0 on Monday afternoon at the Grizzly Baseball Complex.

Junior left hander Peyton Castellow registered 10 strikeouts across the first five innings. Sophomore Fisher Smith, senior Carson Judd, junior Lance Bratlien, and senior Caiden Johnson allowed just two hits over the final four frames.

Junior shortstop JJ Garcia connected on a solo home run to left-center field in the opening frame.

Castellow struck out Jack Ferguson and Dane Richards to leave a pair of base runners in scoring position in the top of the fourth inning and preserve GGC's one-run advantage.

The hosts broke the game open with some clutch two-out hitting in the bottom of the sixth inning. Freshman center fielder Vick Gann lined a run-scoring single to right field that gave the team a 3-0 lead. A few batters later, junior designated hitter Trey Smith brought home two more runs with a single to right field. Senior catcher Grant Pohlman collected a run-scoring single to plate the first of four runs in the inning.

Garcia added an RBI single up the middle in the eighth inning to add an insurance run.

The Grizzlies outhit Indiana Tech (9-5 and receiving votes in the NAIA poll) by a 10-5 margin with Gann, Garcia, Pohlman, and Trey Smith each recording two hits.

Castellow had the second double-digit strikeout game of his season on Monday, improving to 2-0 for the season.

Coach's Corner
"Peyton (Castellow) really set the tone. He threw a lot of first-pitch strikes. We got behind the count earlier (in Friday's 2-1 loss to Indiana Tech). Getting the pitch count to 1-2 against their hitters and attacking the strike zone were points of emphasis in this game. I was also pleased with how we made the adjustment offensively. We needed to get a big inning and finally got it with some key hits (in the sixth inning)," said Head Coach Tommy Goodale.
