Anderson Strikes Out 13 Batters as Baseball Splits Friday’s Action

Senior starting pitcher Shane Anderson struck out a career-high 13 batters as the No. 2-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College baseball team split a pair of games on Friday, falling to Indiana Tech 2-1 before defeating Georgetown College (Kentucky) 9-1 at the Grizzly Baseball Complex.

Anderson allowed one hit across five scoreless innings against Georgetown in his second career start.

Friday's action was the team's first home games in March.

GGC (19-2) stranded the potential game-tying run in scoring position against Indiana Tech (8-4). Back-to-back doubles from senior pinch hitter Wilbert Espinal and junior first baseman Jackson Legg cut the deficit to 2-1.

Indiana Tech reliever Colton Leatherman got a ground out to secure the victory and earn his fifth save of the season.

Trailing 1-0 in the eighth inning, the Grizzlies had the first batters reach to start a potential rally. Walks to freshman right fielder Vick Gann and junior second baseman Payton Fort ended the relief appearance of right hander Kaden Plank.

Leatherman proceeded to get a strike out and an infield fly out to second base before shortstop Keelan Dunkle made a diving stop before throwing out junior designated hitter Lance Bratlien at first base to end the potential scoring threat.

Indiana Tech's Brycen Hannah hit a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning to score a key insurance run. Garrett Rainey opened the team's scoring in the first inning with an RBI single to right field.

In the second contest, GGC scored three runs in the third and fourth innings to build a 6-0 lead. Espinal paced the 10-hit offensive attack for the game by legging out an RBI double to right field in the third inning. He added a run-scoring single to right field one inning later.

That was enough run support for Anderson, who struck out the side in the first, third and fifth innings.

"Shane was outstanding. The way our schedule sets up (four games this weekend), it allowed him to get a start this weekend. His continued development and growth is going to be a big piece for us this season," said Head Coach Tommy Goodale.

Fort scored three runs and went 2-for-3 from the leadoff spot in the batting order.

Coach's Corner
"I have to do a better job of getting the guys prepared for each challenge. We have to execute better in situations. I hate that losing is a part of this game, but we need to learn from our losses and grow from them," said Head Coach Tommy Goodale.

Turning Point
Senior starting pitcher Shane Anderson had his strongest mound performance as a Grizzly, striking out the side in the first, third and fifth innings. The right hander was making his second career start. Anderson finished with 13 strikeouts as the pitching staff recorded 19 punch outs against Georgetown College (Kentucky) – the second most recorded in a game in program history.
