The Georgia Gwinnett College women's tennis team won two doubles matches but dropped a pair of three-set singles matches to suffer a 4-3 setback to Holy Cross College (Indiana) to conclude play in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association NAIA Indoor National Championships on Sunday morning at the Rome (Georgia) Tennis Center.
The Grizzlies (1-4) used strong doubles play to grab an early 2-0 lead. Junior
Mireia Simon Sanchez and freshman
Minami Tan teamed to tally the second point with a 6-1 victory on the No. 2 court. That came after senior
Nicoleta Anestiadi and sophomore
MaryLove Edwards were victorious by a 6-2 score at the top of the doubles lineup.
In singles, GGC took a 3-0 lead in the match after Edwards won on the No. 1 court when opponent Victoria Savvides retired due to an injury. This happened after Edwards had won all six games in the opening set.
Holy Cross (1-3) picked up a pair of straight-set singles triumphs on the No. 2 and No. 5 courts then came out on top after losing the opening set in the final two three-set matches at No. 3 and No. 4 singles.
Anestiadi won the first set against Anna Vanderhyde by a 6-4 score on the No. 4 court. Vanderhyde turned the tables to win the second set 6-4 before winning all six games in the deciding third set. The singles triumph tied the dual match at three points apiece.
Simon Sanchez won the opening set in a tiebreaker at No. 3 singles only to have Sofia Carvalho Rocha capture the final two sets by identical 6-2 set scores.
Coach's Corner
"We took a step forward with our energy today. That was good. Ultimately our inexperience showed in the end. This is something that we'll learn from and be better prepared for the big moments next time," said Head Coach
Tom Rees.
