Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Men’s Tennis Sweeps Home Opener

The No. 2-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College men's tennis team collected its first sweep of the 2026 spring season with a 7-0 victory in Tuesday afternoon's home opener against Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (Georgia) at the GGC Tennis Facility.

The Grizzlies (2-0) seized early momentum of the match by winning all three doubles matches by 6-2 scores. Junior Kanan Gasimov and freshman Nahuel Fernandez collected the first victory on the No. 3 court. Senior Juan Carlos Garcia teamed with freshman Yerassyl Yerdilda to clinch the doubles point on the No. 2 court. Then, senior Francisco Perez Esnaola and sophomore Gian Durrer rounded out the winners at the top of the doubles lineup.

"The doubles point is always going to be huge for us. Opposing teams might come out hot early in doubles play and we saw some of that on the courts today. We just need to maintain our high level of consistency and build momentum from doubles into singles. That diminishes some of the other team's belief for the match," said Head Coach Tom Rees, who is in his first year leading the Grizzlies.

GGC doubled its advantage, at 2-0, as Yerdilda won by identical 6-1 set scores on the No. 2 singles court. He has posted straight-set victories in both of his singles matches early this season.

Durrer actionDurrer collected the host's third point of the match with a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 5 singles, before Carlos Garcia clinched the match victory behind a 6-1, 6-2 win on the No. 4 court.

Senior Luis Francisco Sampedro was victorious for the first time this spring with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph at the top of the singles lineup.

Fernandez won his first match as a Grizzly by 6-3, 6-1 straight-set scores on the No. 6 court.

Coach's Corner
"Defending your home court is a must and we do that with authority, regardless of the opponent. We took care of business and moved guys around so that everyone got matches before playing at the upcoming indoor national championships. We achieved our goals with a professional effort, great attitude and strong body language throughout the match," said Head Coach Tom Rees.
