The Georgia Gwinnett College women's basketball team held off a late rally by Spartanburg Methodist College (South Carolina) to collect a 77-67 victory for Homecoming on Saturday afternoon in the Convocation Center.
The Grizzlies (2-0) led by double digits for a majority of the game after jumping out to a 17-3 lead after a pair of free throws by senior
Peyton Hearvey with just over three minutes remaining in the opening quarter.
GGC led 44-31 at halftime behind strong outside shooting from sophomore
Christen Collins in the first half. The third-team NAIA All-American drained four 3-pointers to score 14 first-half points.
Spartanburg Methodist (0-1) trimmed the deficit to five points twice in the fourth quarter. Two free throws from Krystal Johnson brought the visitors within five points, at 67-62, with 2:56 remaining.
However, senior
Nylaa Fuller converted a three-point play on GGC's next offensive possession. Later, junior
Jamya Griffin scored on a layup in transition to push the lead back to 10 points, at 72-62, with 52 seconds left in the home contest.

Collins led four double-figure scorers with 18 points, while Fuller chipped in 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Sophomore
Jaydah Rainey added 12 points and Griffin scored 11 points to go along with seven rebounds and five assists.
The Grizzlies shot 48 percent from the field and tallied 38 points in the paint.
Coach's Corner
"We did an outstanding job getting to the foul line (making 22-of-28) and rebounding (holding a 42-36 edge). Christen (Collins) got us going offensive and Nylaa's leadership, defensive effort, and ability to make winning plays offensively helped us get over the hump. Having four players score in double figures is always a positive. I'm thankful for our fans who came out to support us on Homecoming and we look forward to seeing them continue to pack the gym throughout the season," said Head Coach
Tory Wooley.
Turning Point
Late in the fourth quarter the Grizzlies found the Pioneers creeping back into the game. GGC's double-digit lead was trimmed to five points with under three minutes remaining in the contest. However, senior
Nylaa Fuller converted a three-point play and a layup from junior
Jamya Griffin sealed the home court triumph.
