Women’s Basketball Builds Early Lead, Defeats Carolina 83-43

The Georgia Gwinnett College women's basketball team started fast and kept up a productive offensive pace in securing a convincing 83-43 victory – the team's eighth straight – over Carolina University (North Carolina) on Tuesday evening in the Convocation Center.

The Grizzlies (15-6) built a large halftime lead, at 43-28, and never slowed down in the meeting of Continental Athletic Conference opponents. The hosts took charge early, scoring the first nine points and led 23-14 after the first quarter. They added 20 more points during the second 10-minute stanza.

In the last meeting between the teams on December 18 (a 61-47 GGC victory), the game was tied 25-25 at halftime, but Tuesday's encounter unfolded quite differently.

Sophomore Jamya Griffin topped the scoresheet with her second straight double-double performance, this one having 18 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Laila Williams came off the bench to add 17 points on 7-of-10 field goal shooting, including 3-of-4 from behind the 3-point arc. Freshman Christen Collins chipped in 11 points and five assists.

WBB Bench emotionGGC ended the night making 44.9 percent of its field goals and 40.9 percent in 3-pointers.

Georgia Gwinnett also dominated the rebounding battle with a 61-33 advantage and collected 24 second-chance points. The team had a 36-14 lead in points in the paint and added 13 fast-break points.

Coach's Corner
"I am proud of today's effort. It was a great team win and we shot the ball extremely well. Our starters initiated the game well and our bench play also was great. We dominated the glass (rebounding) and knocked down the three-point shot. We want to continue to consistently have great practices so that we can enjoy the fruits of that labor on gamedays," said Head Coach Tory Wooley.

Turning Point
The Grizzlies seized full control late of the game in the second quarter, with a 43-28 halftime edge, and carried that momentum into the second half, having a commanding 60-37 lead after three periods. The Grizzlies' defense limited Carolina to nine points in the third quarter while continuing to score efficiently inside and from the perimeter (3-pointers), effectively putting the game out of reach before the final quarter.
