Men’s Tennis’ National Championship Streak Ends in Finals

The Georgia Gwinnett College men's tennis program's streak of 10 consecutive NAIA national titles ended at the 2025 championship tournament with a 4-2 loss to Keiser University (Florida) on Saturday afternoon at the Mobile Tennis Center in Mobile, Alabama.

The Grizzlies (19-3) had won their first 43 postseason matches.

GGC, the tournament's top seed, used a late surge in doubles to take an early 1-0 advantage in the match. Senior Jeremias Rocco and junior Santiago Villarruel teamed for a 6-3 victory at the top of the lineup. Then, senior Aleksandr Kalinin and junior Luis Francisco Sampedro were also victorious by a 6-3 score on the No. 2 court.

Keiser (20-2) rallied to victory after losing the doubles point for the second straight match at this year's championships.

The Seahawks' Gilad Tamar evened the match following a 6-4, 6-2 victory on the No. 5 court and another straight-set triumph, by 7-5, 6-4 scores, on the No. 6 court by Heber Santos gave the team its first lead of the match.

Another Keiser point came when Mathieu Strauss won his No. 4 singles match by a 7-6 (3), 7-5 score.

The final three remaining matches went into a third set and the Grizzlies needing to win each one to leave Mobile with the title.

Villarruel won the last two games to close out the No. 2 singles match, defeating Shaheed Alam 6-1, 3-6, 6-4. That trimmed the deficit to 3-2.

However, Keiser's Yassir Kilani clinched the championship by winning the final six games in the deciding third set for a 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-3 triumph. The team also had a 6-5 lead in the third set on the No. 3 court.

Georgia Gwinnett College had won national championships from 2014-24, with no tournament being held in 2020 because of Covid-19 health considerations.
