Harris’ Gem Fuels No. 2 Baseball Past No. 3 Reinhardt

Senior starting pitcher Ben Harris added another chapter to his heralded career with the Georgia Gwinnett College baseball program, striking out 10 batters in a complete game 4-1 victory over Reinhardt University (Georgia) on Tuesday night at the Grizzly Baseball Complex.

The victory solidified the No. 2-ranked Grizzlies (34-3) among the nation's elite and avenged a 5-2 loss to the Eagles nearly a month ago in Waleska, Georgia. During the past two weeks the team has recorded single midweek triumphs over two No. 3 opponents – Reinhardt (Tuesday) and Tennessee Wesleyan University (March 25) – and swept No. 8 William Carey University (March 28).

GGC has now posted 14 consecutive victories, a stretch that started following the earlier setback at Reinhardt.

Harris was dominant on the home mound, scattering six hits and limiting Reinhardt (29-8) to two hits in 14 at bats with a runner on base. The Eagles were also held to a 2-for-10 hitting performance with runners in scoring position.

The senior righty has now tossed eight complete games over his three seasons in Lawrenceville. He improved his record to 8-0 this season and 26-2 for his career.

Scott Seeker swingMeanwhile, GGC's offense took control by taking a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Senior Scott Seeker lined a run-scoring double down the right field line, putting the team ahead. He scored following a balk later in the frame.

The hosts added another run in the bottom of the seventh inning as senior Jon Ponder scored from second base following a failed pickoff attempt by a Reinhardt relief pitcher.

Senior Braxton Meguiar tallied two hits and scored twice to lead GGC's seven-hit offensive attack. Senior Kyle Norton also registered two hits in the midweek triumph.

Coach's Corner
"As a group, we needed to settle a score from earlier this season when we did not put our best foot forward. We wanted to set the record straight in a top-five matchup. We expected to win this game. I'm super proud of our group. We rode the back of our ace and the toughest team showed up tonight and won the ballgame," said Head Coach Jeremy Sheetinger.

Turning Point
After regaining the lead at 3-1 in the third inning, the GGC defense rose to the occasion to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard despite collecting two hits. Junior right fielder Alex Harrell threw out a runner attempting to stretch a leadoff base hit into a double. Junior left fielder Tyler M. Martin recorded six putouts defensively in the contest. Most importantly, senior starting pitcher Ben Harris went the distance on the mound, striking out 10 batters.
