A pair of sixth-inning rallies paved the way for No. 23-ranked Middle Georgia State University to have a doubleheader sweep over the No. 8 Georgia Gwinnett College softball team by 3-2 and 2-1 scores on Wednesday evening in Cochran, Georgia.
The hosts scored three runs in the sixth inning for the comeback victory in the opener before a two-run homer was the deciding factor in the nightcap.
In the first game, GGC (27-8) jumped out a quick 2-0 lead as sophomore
Sophie Sisk hit a run-scoring single in the opening frame. Then, senior
Jane Hoover drove in the second run of the inning with an RBI ground out to second base.
Middle Georgia State (24-8) came back to tie the game, at 2-2, in the sixth inning following a fielding error. Grace Avery followed with an RBI single to left field that put the Knights ahead 3-2.
The nightcap had a similar fate for the Grizzlies, which got off to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as junior
Sara Roussel scored from second base following a fielder's choice on a ball hit by senior
Makenna Talcott.
That lead remained until Middle Georgia State's Kaylee Oliver connected on a two-run homer in the sixth inning.
MGSU pitcher Emily Proctor picked up the win in both games, striking out seven GGC batters across each outing.
