Baseball Completes Home Stand with Two More Victories

The No. 4-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College baseball team concluded its 16-game home stand with two more victories on Saturday at the Grizzly Baseball Complex, ending the weekend with its 11th straight victory and 20th overall triumph of the season.

GGC (20-2) used a balanced offensive attack, with all nine starting players registering a hit, in a 20-6 win against Lindsey Wilson College (Kentucky) in the opener. Then, the team plated 10 first inning runs to defeat Thomas University (Georgia) 12-6 in the nightcap.

The hosts scored 11 times during the second inning against Lindsey Wilson (3-17) before pushing across six more runs in the fourth inning.

Senior Jon Ponder brought home a pair of runs with a double to give the Grizzlies a 4-0 advantage. Classmate Sam Seeker cleared the bases with a double to left field before later scoring on an RBI single by junior Grant Pohlman for the 11th run of the frame.

Later, Ponder legged out an RBI triple to extend the lead to 15-4. Senior Scott Seeker added a sacrifice fly before consecutive run-scoring doubles by junior Daniel Stephens and senior Kyle Norton capped a six-run fourth inning.

In the nightcap, GGC started fast by putting 10 runs on the scoreboard in the opening frame against Thomas (6-17). Senior Braxton Meguiar jumpstarted the offense with an RBI single to left field. Senior Jackson Cobb brought home the third run of the inning with a single. Ponder added his second hit of the inning, lining a two-run single up the middle.

Senior Paul Winland Jr. collected an RBI single to left field for the team's ninth run before scoring himself on Scott Seeker's single.

Thomas scored one run in the second inning and added five runs during the fourth inning to get within four runs, at 10-6.

A strong effort by GGC's middle relief pitching extinguished any opposing rally as junior Coleman Willis tossed two scoreless innings in relief. Then, sophomore Shane Anderson struck out six batters across three scoreless innings. Anderson picked up his second win from the bullpen this spring.

"You've got to earn the next inning as a reliever, so it was important to come in and give us three solid innings. The sweeper (pitch) felt comfortable and was effective today," said Anderson.

Scott Seeker plated an insurance run in the bottom half of the eighth inning on an RBI single to right field. He went 4-for-6 at the plate, with three RBI and three runs scored, on the day, highlighted by a 3-for-4 performance against Thomas.

Ponder tallied two hits in both contests, while Stephens scored three runs against Lindsey Wilson in the starting opportunity.

Coach's Corner
"Both games today gave us something different. We were able to separate offensively in the first game, but the second gave us a game where every guy needed to be called upon. Our middle relief bullpen especially did a fantastic job, giving us an opportunity to work on some things," said Head Coach Jeremy Sheetinger.

A strong effort in the second game by the Grizzlies' middle relief pitching unit helped secure the weekend sweep. Junior Coleman Willis tossed two scoreless innings after Thomas plated five runs in the fourth inning, getting within 10-6.
