Men’s Tennis Sweeps Montreat 5-0 to Start Busy Stretch

The No. 1-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College men's tennis team capped a perfect six-match home stand with a 5-0 sweep against Montreat College (North Carolina) on Friday afternoon at the GGC Tennis Facility.

GGC (11-0) won 12 of the 13 games to quickly secure the doubles point for the 1-0 lead in the match. Senior Jeremias Rocco teamed with junior Santiago Villarruel to win all six games at the top of the lineup. The duo of senior Aleksandr Kalinin and junior Luis Francisco Sampedro was victorious by a 6-1 score on the No. 3 court.

The team's strong play carried over into singles. Kalinin gave the hosts a 2-0 lead after his opponent on the No. 1 court was forced to retire due to an injury. This came after the Grizzly player won the first set by a 6-2 score.

Villarruel, the NAIA's top-ranked singles player, won 12 of the 13 games on the No. 2 court.

GGC's last two points were scored by freshmen. Mateo Larrea won all 12 games on the No. 5 court before Gian Durrer had a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at No. 6 singles.
