Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Five Double-Figure Scorers Propel Men’s Basketball to Win over Midway

The No. 25-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College men's basketball team extended its winning streak to six straight games with a decisive 92-66 victory over Midway University (Kentucky) on Friday evening to open this weekend's Cumberlands Classic in Williamsburg, Kentucky.

The Grizzlies (9-2) connected on 53.2 percent of their field goals and relied on a balanced offensive attack, with five double-figure scorers.

Junior Devontre Chaney led GGC with 19 points while having nine rebounds. Senior Drew Kramer and freshman Patrick Johnson each scored 14 points, and senior Manny Montgomery and junior Jahiem Berry each accounted for 11 points.

Back-to-back 3-point field goals from Kramer gave the victors a 27-11 advantage with 9:44 left in the first half.

Johnson made his second dunk of the opening 20 minutes to give the team a 37-19 lead at the 4:05 mark. The team made 11 of its 14 free throws in the period to have a comfortable 44-32 halftime lead.

In the second half, five consecutive points from Chaney pushed the Grizzlies' margin to 16 points, at 52-36, following a dunk with 16:12 remaining. Another dunk, this one by Kramer, gave the team a 72-48 lead with less than eight minutes left in the contest.

GGC's defensive effort was also effective, with Midway's 66 points being the fewest that the team has allowed an opponent this season.

All nine players that saw playing time for GGC got into the scoring column for the game.

Coach's Corner
"Holding a team under 40 percent shooting is always our goal, so I was pleased with our defensive performance. We played our brand of basketball, and it was a good team win. The bench players did really well and extended our lead both times of the first half," said Head Coach Chase Teichmann.

Turning Point
The Grizzlies turned in their best defensive performance of the season, limiting Midway to 38.2 percent shooting and season-low 66 points. Meanwhile, GGC's offensive play led to a 27-11 lead with 9:44 left in the first half, after consecutive 3-point field goals from senior Drew Kramer and additional shots behind the 3-point arc by junior Jahiem Berry (twice) and senior Manny Montgomery.
