Bench Sparks Men’s Basketball to First Road Win

The Georgia Gwinnett College men's basketball team received 36 points from bench players to pick up an 83-74 victory against the College of Coastal Georgia in the program's first road contest on Tuesday evening.

Junior Jahiem Berry made five 3-pointers to score 19 points, while freshman Patrick Johnson added 13 points and nine rebounds to spark the support from GGC's reserve players.

Berry drained a key 3-pointer with 1:16 left to give the visitors a 76-69 lead.

"Jahiem's shot making is at an elite level and helps our offensive spacing on the floor. Our bench is really good. You don't know who it is going to be on any given night," said Head Coach Chase Teichmann.

GGC (3-0) scored seven straight points during the second half to grab a 55-50 lead after a layup from senior Deonte' Martinez at the 11:54 mark. The guard scored a game-high 20 points, while contributing six assists.
Martinez jump shot
After Coastal Georgia (1-1) took a 60-58 lead on a jump shot by Derrick Harris with 8:35 remaining, the Grizzlies went on a 9-0 run over the next five minutes to take a 67-60 lead. Johnson capped the scoring spurt with a basket at the 3:50 mark.

"It was a real physical game. They (Coastal Georgia) are hard to keep out of the paint. Our guys made it hard for them and contested their inside shots," said Teichmann about the two defensive stretches.

A 3-pointer from the Mariners' Isaiah Edden brought the hosts within two points, at 71-69, with 1:45 left. That's when Berry made a jumper at the 1:31 mark and followed with a shot from behind the arc on the next offensive possession to give GGC a 76-69 lead.

Martinez made all six of his free throw attempts down the stretch to seal the road triumph. GGC went 20-of-25 from the free throw line.

"We really executed down the stretch and made our free throws," stated Teichmann.

The Grizzlies had four players reach double figures with junior Devontre Chaney recording a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds to along with five assists and four steals.

Coach's Corner
"We had elite focus and energy from the moment we woke up today. We played hard, smart and together. We hadn't shown all three areas in a game yet this season, but tonight I think we did. I am extremely proud of this team," said Head Coach Chase Teichmann.
