GGC Sweeps 2025-26 Season’s First CAC Basketball Defensive Awards

Strong performances that led to four victories during the programs' inaugural week have earned Georgia Gwinnett College juniors Devontre Chaney and Peyton Hearvey recognition as the first Continental Athletic Conference Men's and Women's Basketball Defensive Players of the Week for the 2025-26 season.

Chaney layupChaney, the men's award recipient, had a triple-double performance in the Grizzlies' inaugural game and averaged a double-double (12.5 points and 12 rebounds) in a pair of victories for the week. He also averaged 6.5 assists per contest.

The guard-forward from Lake Wales, Florida, scored 15 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and dished out 10 assists in last Thursday's historic 106-70 victory against Spartanburg Methodist College (South Carolina) in GGC's new Convocation Center. He followed that with a double-double performance with 10 points and 11 rebounds in the Grizzlies' 76-72 home triumph against Milligan University (Tennessee) last Saturday.

Hearvey, the women's honoree, led GGC in rebounding with six rebounds per contest in a pair of home victories. She averaged 11.5 points a game as well.

The Tupelo, Mississippi, native held Toccoa Falls College (Georgia) 2024-25 leading scorer Jada Wood (17.4 points per game) to just two points in the GGC victory. Hearvey opened the season with 11 points and seven rebounds along with two steals in the inaugural game, a 73-49 victory against Brenau University (Georgia) last Thursday.

GGC men's and women's teams stand 2-0 this season. The men hit the road for the first time to play College of Coastal Georgia on Tuesday, October 28, in Brunswick, Georgia, starting at 7 p.m. The team will then travel to play in the Tulsa Shootout from Friday, October 31, through Saturday, November 1.

Meanwhile, the women's team continues its five-game season-opening home stand against Spartanburg Methodist on Thursday, October 30, starting at 5:30 p.m. Then, Bluefield University (Virigina) will be the opponent on Saturday, November 1, at 1 p.m.
