Fast Start Propels Women’s Basketball Past Toccoa Falls

The Georgia Gwinnett College women's basketball team placed three players in double figures and scored 24 consecutive points in the first half for a convincing 83-33 victory Saturday evening over Toccoa Falls College (Georgia) during Grizzlyfest in the Convocation Center.

Freshman Christen Collins paced the Grizzlies (2-0) with 17 points, including a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line. Junior Peyton Hearvey connected on four 3-point field goals to score 12 points, while classmate Nevaeh Mageo came off the bench to chip in 10 points.

"The scoring was very balanced and that's what we're looking to do offensively. We had three players in double figures, with three other players having eight points to help as well," said Head Coach Tory Wooley.

GGC used a 24-0 offensive run across the first and second quarters to grab a commanding 39-9 lead after a fast break layup by sophomore Jamya Griffin with 5:08 remaining in the first half. Mageo hit three 3-pointers during the second quarter as the hosts took a 47-15 halftime lead.
Mageo 3-point field goal
The Grizzlies scored 20 or more points in three of the four quarters in Saturday's game.

Juniors Nylaa Fuller and Maddie Presha joined freshman Christal Collins in scoring eight points to help the team post its second straight victory, both at home.

The team shot 41.8 percent from the floor and made eight 3-pointers in the triumph. GGC held a 52-40 rebounding edge and forced 27 turnovers.

Coach's Corner
"We're excited to see the players' effort on the court. We did a really good job of getting after it defensively. Nevaeh (Mageo) did an excellent job coming off the bench and hit some crucial shots. We also got really good minutes from Nylaa (Fuller). We couldn't be more proud of our team and its start to the season," said Head Coach Tory Wooley.

Turning Point
For the second straight game, the Grizzlies closed out the first quarter strong to create separation from their opponent. GGC then carried that defensive intensity over into the second quarter, holding Toccoa Falls scoreless for nearly a nine-minute span. The team's 24-0 run built an insurmountable 47-15 halftime lead.
