Women’s Tennis Opens ITA NAIA Title Defense with Dominant Win

The top-seeded Georgia Gwinnett College women's tennis team swept No. 8 William Woods University (Missouri) 4-0 in Friday morning's quarterfinal round of the 2025 Intercollegiate Tennis Association's NAIA Indoor National Championship in Overland Park, Kansas.

The Grizzlies will face No. 4-seed Lindsey Wilson College (Kentucky) in a semifinal match on Saturday, February 1, beginning at 9 a.m. Lindsey Wilson defeated No. 5-seed Southeastern University (Florida) 4-3 on Friday.

GGC (3-0), the defending tournament champions, grabbed early momentum in the match behind a pair of 6-1 doubles triumphs on the No. 2 and No. 3 courts.

Senior Justine Lespes teamed with freshman Cherysh Henry for a victory at No. 3 doubles. Then, junior Alexandra Melnikova and freshman Elizabet Verizova clinched the point with the win in the No. 2 doubles match.

The strong play carried over into the Grizzlies' singles action by winning the opening set on all six courts.

Freshman MaryLove Edwards improved to 3-0 on the season with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Sophia Hausner on the No. 5 court.

GGC's lead grew to 3-0 over the No. 18-ranked Owls after freshman Diana Ilie was victorious by a 6-1, 6-0 score at No. 4 singles against Samya Sikand.

Senior Isid Hernandez delivered the match-clinching point on the No. 6 court with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph against Chloe Hecker.

Georgia Gwinnett College has won all three of its spring matches by shutout scores.

"Our energy and performance were great today. Our goal is to keep building and set a positive tone for the week, and that's exactly what the players did today. I can't ask for more on day one. Now, we put our focus into the tomorrow's semifinal round," said Head Coach Hannah Keeling.
