Women’s Tennis Has Strong Spring Debut with Sweep

Five Georgia Gwinnett College women's tennis players were winners in Grizzly debuts as the NAIA's No. 1 team swept NCAA Division II Belmont Abbey College (North Carolina) 7-0 in Friday afternoon's 2025 season opener at the GGC Tennis Facility.

Junior Alexandra Melnikova helped secure two points for the Grizzlies (1-0). First, she teamed with freshman Elizabet Verizova to clinch the match's doubles point with a 6-2 triumph on the No. 2 court. Then, Melnikova picked up a dominant 6-1, 6-0 triumph at No. 2 singles to give the hosts an early 2-0 advantage.

Freshman MaryLove Edwards won by identical 6-1 set scores at No. 5 singles in her first match for the Green and Gray to collect GGC's match-deciding fourth point. Classmate Diana Ilie was victorious in three sets on the No. 4 court, capturing the third-set tiebreaker by a 10-6 score. Ilie forced the deciding set with a 7-5 second-set score.

Freshman Cherysh Henry also rallied for a three-set triumph at the top of the singles lineup, winning the second set 6-1 and then taking that momentum into the tiebreaker for a 10-5 victory.

Senior Isid Hernandez picked up a straight-set victory behind a 6-1, 6-3 score at No. 6 singles to round out the Grizzlies making their spring debuts.

Lespes forehandSenior Justine Lespes tallied GGC's third point of the match with a 6-1, 6-2 victory on the No. 3 singles court in Friday's season opener.

In doubles, all three pairings were victorious by 6-2 scores on their home courts. The Henry-Lespes duo secured the first triumph of the match on the No. 3 court. Then, Hernandez and Ilie teamed up for a victory on the No. 1 court.

Coach's Corner
"We have a brand new team this season. We were very solid in doubles, and I see a lot of promise in those teams. A couple of freshmen got their first singles wins. MaryLove (Edwards) at No. 5 singles competed like she has been here for four years. It is important for your players to get these early matches in preparation for the upcoming ITA NAIA Indoor National Championships," said Head Coach Hannah Keeling.
