Women’s Tennis Scores Another Sweep

The NAIA's top-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College women's tennis team recorded its 10th sweep within 12 matches this spring, defeating McPherson College (Kansas) 7-0 on Thursday afternoon at the GGC Tennis Facility.

The Grizzlies (12-0) quickly won the doubles point behind strong play on all three courts. Senior Angel Carney and sophomore Versace Gatti won all six games on the No. 3 court. Then, the No. 13-ranked doubles team of juniors Justine Lespes and Carol Mora gave the hosts a 1-0 advantage in the dual match with a 6-1 victory on the No. 2 court.

The No. 3-ranked doubles pairing of seniors Stephanie Fernandez and Iryna Lysykh recorded a 7-5 triumph against the No. 19 team of Camila Sanchez and Taimi Nashiku on the No. 1 court. The Fernandez-Lysykh tandem has a 12-0 record this season.

Overall, GGC has a 29-1 doubles record (.967 winning percentage) in all matches this spring.

The Grizzlies' six NAIA-ranked singles players won in straight sets to close out Thursday's home court victory. Lysykh, ranked No. 20, won all 12 games against No. 39 Zeynep Barut at No. 2 singles to give the team a 2-0 lead.

Then, No. 54 Gatti recorded a 6-0, 6-1 victory on the No. 4 court before top-ranked Lespes, and reigning NAIA Player of the Week, won a 6-0, 6-2 match at No. 1 singles against Sanchez.

Mora, ranked No. 66, picked up a 6-3, 6-0 win on the No. 6 court before No. 30 Fernandez won by 6-0, 6-1 scores at No. 5 singles. Finally, No. 12 Jovic earned a 6-1, 6-3 victory against No. 51 Grace Maxey on the No. 4 court to round out the strong singles performances.

"Everyone in singles played with intention and was super competitive. Justine played one of her best matches this season and Iryna has really taken big strides forward," said Head Coach Hannah Keeling.

Gatti return"This was our best doubles performance of the season. We've been working a lot this week on the fundamentals and it's great to see the players using them in the matches. Everybody is moving in the right direction and I can't wait to compete against a Division I opponent next week," said Head Coach Hannah Keeling.
