Softball Scores Sweep, Jarvis Tosses 4th Career Perfect Game

The No. 4-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College softball team collected its second straight sweep over an in-state opponent, defeating Truett-McConnell University 10-8 and 8-0 on Thursday evening at the Grizzly Softball Complex.

The six-inning nightcap featured junior pitcher Annalise Jarvis throwing her fourth career perfect game and the program's fifth overall perfect game. Her last perfect game came on the road against Truett-McConnell on April 15, 2023.

Meanwhile, the Grizzlies (14-2) won a back-and-forth affair in the opening contest. Sophomore Summer Hickson lined a two-run double to right-center field to break an 8-8 deadlock in the bottom of the sixth inning.

GGC had pushed across four runs in the bottom of the first inning to grab a 4-3 lead. Junior Jane Hoover drove home a pair of runs with a single. Classmate Angelica Gallegos lifted a fly ball down the right field line for an RBI single to put the hosts in front.

Truett-McConnell (4-7) used its second three-run inning to take a 6-4 lead in the third inning and maintained the two-run advantage, at 7-5, following an RBI single by Cassie Boatright in the fourth inning.

Senior Kloey Goins hit a two-out RBI single to center field as the Grizzlies closed the gap again, at 7-6, before adding two more runs on a throwing error to regain the lead, at 8-7.

Peacock pitchJunior reliever Mollie Peacock picked up the win with 3.2 strong innings in the circle, where she scattered seven hits and two runs to pick up her first win of the 2024 season. Jarvis retired all three batters she faced in tossing a scoreless seventh inning to collect her fourth save of the season and third of the week after two relief appearances in Tuesday's doubleheader sweep to Middle Georgia State University.

In the nightcap, junior Haley Robinson went 3-for-4 at the plate with her first career home run to start a four-run second inning. She later added a single and a double in the strong offensive performance.

Freshman Morgan McQuagge lined a key two-run single to center field during the second inning.

A few innings later, junior Lindzie Owen brought home two runs with an infield single and Goins followed with a run-scoring single to give GGC a 7-0 advantage.

Jarvis improved to 6-0 inside the pitching circle after striking out 14 of the 18 batters she faced in the nightcap. The right hander retired all 36 batters she faced across 12 perfect innings in four appearances during the week.

COACH'S CORNER
"I'm proud of the team for getting timely hits with runners on base. Our hitters are dialed in and doing a nice job of passing the bat to the next player. That aspect really shined in the first game when we answered their runs with runs of our own," said Head Coach Kat Ihlenburg.

TURNING POINT
Thursday's doubleheader sweep was a team effort with three pitchers being in the circle during the first game while nine hits from throughout the batting lineup accounted for eight runs in the nightcap. The Grizzlies scored in all but one offensive inning in the opener and matched – and eventually overcame – Truett-McConnell's offense with runs in the home half of the same innings. Sophomore Summer Hickson provided the go-ahead two-run double in the sixth inning to account for the 10-8 triumph.
