Women’s Tennis Digs Deep to Defeat Emory

The NAIA's No. 1-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College women's tennis team put together one of its best performances of the season in defeating NCAA Division III powerhouse Emory University (Georgia) 6-1 on Friday afternoon at the GGC Tennis Facility.

On the court for the second straight afternoon, the Grizzlies (9-0) rallied to take the doubles point. The senior tandem of Stephanie Fernandez and Iryna Lysykh secured the point with a 7-5 triumph against the nation's No. 5 Division III team on the No. 1 court. That came after the team of juniors Justine Lespes and Carol Mora posted a 6-4 victory on the No. 3 court.

Emory (1-1) evened the dual match score following a retirement victory early in the No. 6 singles match.

However, GGC captured the next five matches. Lespes set the tone with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 win over Division III No. 6 Emily Kantrovitz at No. 1 singles to give the hosts a 2-1 lead. Lespes, the NAIA's No. 1 singles player, is 9-0 in singles matches this spring.

Mora actionSenior Teodora Jovic, the NAIA's No. 4-ranked player, picked up a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 3 singles. Sophomore Versace Gatti won in straight sets by a 7-5, 6-4 score on the No. 4 court for the Grizzlies' fourth point of the match.

The last two points came in hard-fought three-set matches. Lysykh rallied after dropping the opening set 7-5 against Division III No. 7 Ana Cristina Perez on the No. 2 court by winning the second set 6-4 and then the competitive 11-9 third-set tiebreaker.

Fernandez also came out on top of a deciding third-set tiebreaker, beating Marte 14-12 after the two players split the first two sets.

GGC collected its third win of the week and ninth victory of the busy spring season.

COACH'S CORNER
"This was our best performance so far this season. It was a competitive match throughout and all of our players stepped up and came together on the court today. They have worked so hard and that was shown throughout this match. I'm really excited about the future of this team," said Head Coach Hannah Keeling.
