The No. 1-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College baseball team wraps up its 11-game season-opening home stand by hosting West Virginia Tech in a four-game series this weekend at the Grizzly Baseball Complex.
The Grizzlies (6-1) and Golden Bears (1-7) are scheduled to begin the series with a doubleheader on Saturday, February 19, starting at 2 p.m. The two teams will be back on the diamond Sunday, February 20, for another doubleheader, starting at noon.
GGC will be looking to get back in the win column after a 13-7 home setback to No. 5 Tennessee Wesleyan University on Tuesday.
Senior
Austin Bates is the reigning Continental Athletic Conference Hitter of the Week and leads the team with a .500 batting average, 13 hits, two home runs, and 12 RBI. Freshman
Braxton Meguiar is hitting at a .444 clip and drove in three runs in the nine-inning game against Tennessee Wesleyan.
Senior
J.D. Stubbs also has brought home 12 runs while starting all seven games as designated hitter in the lineup. He has posted a .400 batting average and legged out four doubles.

Senior
Livingston Morris (.333) and sophomore
Chase Evans (.316) round out the team's balanced offensive attack through the first seven games.
On the mound, senior
Kevin Kyle was named the CAC Pitcher of the Week after opening the season with a pair of victories. He stands 2-0 and has posted a 0.90 earned run average among his two starts. Kyle has recorded nine strikeouts in each appearance.
Junior
Rob Hamby has also won both of his starts and has tallied 10 strikeouts in 10 innings.
GGC's pitching staff has combined for a 3.11 ERA and tallied 77 strikeouts across 55 innings this spring.

MEET THE COACHES
Georgia Gwinnett College: Jeremy Sheetinger is in his third season leading the Grizzlies, posting an 80-13 record in the team's dugout. Overall, he has compiled a 166-56 record in six collegiate seasons. Sheetinger guided the Grizzlies to the 2021 NAIA national championship. Previously, he served as the head coach at Spalding University (Kentucky) before working with the American Baseball Coaches Association from 2016-19.
West Virginia Tech: Lawrence Nesselrodt is in his 14th season leading the Golden Bears, tallying a 267-362 record. He has posted 596 wins in 38 seasons as a collegiate head coach.

Seniors
Austin Bates and
Kevin Kyle are recipients of the first Continental Athletic Conference baseball Hitter and Pitcher of the Week awards for the 2022 season. Bates batted .524, hit a pair of home runs, and drove in multiple runs in four of GGC's first six games. Kyle stands 2-0 with a 0.90 earned run average and matched his career high with nine strikeouts in both appearances.

GGC has recorded 20 extra-base hits through the first seven games this season. The team has legged out 16 doubles and one triple while hitting three home runs. Twenty-nine percent of GGC's hits have gone for extra bases this spring.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN BEARS
West Virginia (1-7) has dropped its last seven contests after opening with a 2-1 win against Thomas More College (Kentucky) on February 6. Broedy Boyce leads the team with a .471 batting average while Hunter Fansler (.375) has connected on the team's only home run.

The Grizzlies have won nine of the 11 games against West Virginia Tech, with one of the Golden Bears' two triumphs coming last year, 6-3, in the final game of a two-game weekend set.
