Scoring a goal in each half, No. 9-ranked Southeastern University (Florida) picked up a 2-0 victory against the Georgia Gwinnett College women's soccer team in a competitive match Tuesday night in Lakeland, Florida.
The Fire (6-1-1) buried a penalty kick in the 31st minute from Naira Lopez and then received an own goal in the 86th minute.
Playing for the first time since September 21, GGC (2-4-5) outshot the hosts by a 7-3 margin during the first half. Southeastern came back to outshoot the Grizzlies by a 12-3 margin in the second half and the hosts held a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal across the 90 minutes of action.
Junior
Miranda Robinson paced GGC's offensive attack with a match high-tying five shots. Classmate
Mariana Clarke added two shots.
Tuesday's match concluded the team's four-match road trip.
"We played better soccer and that is the first step to getting out of our recent slump. We had to start where and that's what happened tonight. I thought we were the better side in the first half. It is disappointing that a penalty kick and an own goal were the conceded goals considering how we played," said Head Coach
Dr. Mike Giuliano.

The Grizzlies were unable to capitalize on their scoring chances and shots in the first half. The visitors outshot Southeastern by a 7-3 margin in the first 45 minutes and then managed only three shots in the second half. The Fire got on the scoreboard from a penalty kick goal in the 31st minute – the team's first shot of the first half. That score came after GGC had taken the first six shots of the match.
