Women's Soccer Scores Shutout in Opener

Georgia Gwinnett College women's soccer had two successful debuts Tuesday night.

Freshman midfielder Victoria Bischof found the back of the net in her first collegiate match, and the No. 20-ranked Grizzlies scored a 1-0 season-opening victory against No. 15 Tennessee Wesleyan University on Grizzly Green Out at the Grizzly Soccer Complex.

The Grizzlies (1-0) controlled the match statistically, holding the Bulldogs (0-2) without a shot for the first half. At the same time, the hosts tallied nine shots by halftime. Overall, GGC had an 18-3 shot advantage and 10 corner kicks, versus just one for TWU.

Bishof's winning goal came in a scramble in front of the net during the 77th minute of the match. Senior Ana Gonzalez attempted a shot from the left side of the 18-yard box. A second shot by senior Maddy Keenan was saved by a defender. On the clearance attempt, Bischof got control of the ball and found the back of the net with a shot from the top of the box.

"You have to like an 18-3 shot edge against the No. 15-ranked team in the country. I thought they (Tennessee Wesleyan) did a good job of making adjustments in the second half. All three of their shots came in the first 15 minutes. We have to adjust when teams adjust and that is on me. Then, we sorted it out and for the last 25 minutes the action was deep in [TWU's] territory," said Head Coach Dr. Mike Giuliano.

Turning Point
Looking for the elusive first goal of the match, GGC finally found the back of the net on its 14th shot of the match. Senior Ana Gonzalez hit an initial shot from the left side of the 18-yard box. Tennessee Wesleyan goalkeeper Lauren Teal was able to deflect the ball to senior Maddy Keenan. Her shot attempt was stopped by a couple of Bulldog defenders on the goal line. In the process of clearing the ball, freshman Victoria Bischof gained control of the ball and found the back of the net for the eventual match-winning goal.
