Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 The Georgia Gwinnett College baseball team used two different ways to earn a doubleheader sweep against Stillman College Saturday afternoon at the Grizzly Baseball Complex. The Grizzlies picked up a 6-5 victory in the opener before scoring 16 times in the third inning of a 19-0 triumph.
GGC (29-8), ranked No. 2 in the NAIA, jumped out to a 6-1 lead through the first three innings of the first game. All six of the early runs came with two outs.
Stillman (14-16) made things interesting in the top of the seventh by scoring four runs and placing the potential game-tying run at third base with no outs. However, junior reliever Jordan Tylski shut the door on the comeback effort. Stillman's Tres Wooten got caught while trying to steal second base for the first out of the inning. Then, Tylski got two strikeouts to secure the victory.
In the second game, GGC sent 21 batters to the plate in the third inning. Senior Ryan Lark connected on a two-run home run after senior Marcus McCorkle and freshman Nick Barnes had run-scoring doubles. The team collected eight of its 13 hits in the inning.
Tylski, the starting shortstop, hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning.
Juniors Tucker Plouffe and Caleb Gay picked up victories on the mound in both starting assignments. Gay allowed just two hits in the second game, while Plouffe registered five strikeouts.
Turning Point
Leading 6-1 going into the seventh inning Stillman mounted a rally, scoring four runs and having the potential game-tying run at third base with no outs. That's when GGC turned to junior relief pitcher Jordan Tylski to preserve the one-run lead. The first out came as Stillman's base runner got caught in a rundown while trying to steal second base. Then, Tylski struck out the next two batters to end the game.
