Box Score The winning ways at the Grizzly Baseball Complex continued for the No. 2-ranked Georgia Gwinnett College baseball team Friday night, defeating Talladega College (Ala.) 13-6 to begin the three-game weekend series.
The Grizzlies (37-8) fell behind the Tornadoes early, but tallied 17 hits to score 13 runs and extend the team's winning streak to 11 games.
Trailing 4-0 in the third inning, back-to-back two-run singles from senior Marcus McCorkle and freshman Nick Barneserased the deficit. A run-scoring single from junior Brandon Frazier gave the hosts a 5-4 lead.
Talladega (24-18) would come back to tie the game in the fourth inning, only to see GGC take the lead for good in the bottom of the frame on a RBI single from McCorkle.
The hosts added three runs in the sixth inning and had four-run eighth inning to pull away in the series opener.
Frazier went 4-for-5 at the plate, with three RBI, while freshman Walter Coursey and McCorkle each tallied three hits for the Grizzlies.
Meanwhile, junior pitcher Hunter Peck improved to 8-0 on the season with 10 strikeouts spread across six innings. Junior Matthew Swain had five strikeouts in three innings to earn the save out of the bullpen.
The two teams play a doubleheader Saturday, April 21, at 2 p.m. on Senior Day. The program will honor 10 senior student-athletes in a pregame ceremony.
Turning Point
Talladega jumped out in front 4-0 and scored a run during each of the first three innings of the game. However, Georgia Gwinnett College responded in the home half of the third inning with a five-run frame, started by back-to-back singles from senior Tony Salvaggio and junior C.J. Ballard. Senior Marcus McCorkle got the scoring started with a two-run single. Freshman Nick Barnes then tied the game with a two-run single. A RBI single from junior Brandon Frazier gave the Grizzlies the lead.
