The Georgia Gwinnett College men's soccer team emphatically punched its ticket to Irvine, Calif., for the NAIA National Championship tournament site behind a 4-0 Opening Round victory at Southeastern University on Saturday evening in Lakeland, Fla.
The Grizzlies (12-5-1) advance to the national championship site for the second consecutive season. The team reached the quarterfinals in 2017. The championship tournament begins Nov. 26 and lasts through Dec. 1.
GGC, the tournament's No. 16 seed, scored twice in a two-minute stretch early in the first half. First, sophomore
Michael Weber converted a rebound effort in the 12th minute after a shot from freshman
Omar Thali. Then, two minutes later, freshman
Gianmaria Fiore was on the receiving end of a corner kick from Weber.
Thali extended GGC's lead in the second half with a goal in the 61st minute. Sophomore
Toni Tiente rounded out the scoring with a goal in the 86th minute. Tiente has now registered a point in 15 of GGC's 18 matches this season.
GGC held a commanding 10-to-1 advantage in shots on goal over the 90 minutes of action. Overall, the team had a 15-to-12 edge in total shots, with an 8-to-1 shot advantage occurring in the first half.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Matija Gligorovic recorded his fifth shutout of the season and his first in NAIA postseason play.
Coach's Corner
"This was our best performance of the year. The early goal was a big momentum boost for us. Then, we were able to get a second goal very quickly. Three of the four goals came in the run of play and we converted a set piece goal," said Head Coach
Steve DeCou.
Turning Point
After taking a 1-0 lead on the road, the Grizzlies pounced on a corner kick goal two minutes later when sophomore
Michael Weber delivered a corner kick to the far post, where freshman
Gianmaria Fiore finished the chance to give the team a 2-0 lead.
