The 14th-ranked Georgia Gwinnett baseball team dropped its Friday night road contest against NCAA Division II foe Auburn Montgomery (Ala.), being shut out by the Warhawks in seven innings in AUM's 10-0 run-rule victory over the Grizzlies.
With the loss, Auburn Montgomery (22-22) takes the season series lead against the Grizzlies 2-1.
"AUM's pitcher threw an incredibly great game tonight and kept us off balance all evening," said GGC head coach Brad Stromdahl. "The wonderful thing about baseball is that we get to play again tomorrow. I'm looking forward to bouncing back after today's loss."
The Warhawks scored at least one run in the first five innings of play, collecting their 10-0 advantage over the Grizzlies. AUM first scored on an RBI-single by John-Mark Cosby in the first and added a second run an inning later on a sacrifice fly to right by Brandon Davis. In the third, Auburn Montgomery pushed its lead to 4-0 with an RBI-single by Trevor Flynn and a wild pitch by the Grizzlies.
Auburn Montgomery added another pair of runs in the fourth, making it 6-0. Right fielder Tanner Russell drove in his second run of the day with a single to right while Nathan Langley pushed a RBI seeing-eye single through the right side of the infield for the six-run lead.
AUM would go on to score four more runs in the fifth before GGC's left-hander Taylor Folsom held the Warhawks scoreless in fifth to keep the game at 10-0 in Auburn Montgomery's favor.
Georgia Gwinnett (32-17) managed five hits in the contest, receiving a 2-for-3 performance from shortstop Marcus McCorkle while also getting hits from left fielder Brandon Frazier, center fielder Chris Jones, and first baseman Alex Garland.
AUM's Chase Johnson (6-4) picked up the victory, pitching a complete-game shutout over seven innings. The right-hander struck out eight batters, scattering five hits while walking two Grizzlies. GGC's Tyler Souris (6-2) was credited with the loss, surrendering four earned runs on five hits through 2.1 innings of work.
Both teams will meet again on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. Eastern at the AUM Baseball Complex (6692 AUM Drive, Montgomery, Ala. 36117).
Georgia Gwinnett will return to the Grizzly Baseball Complex on Sunday, April 23 when the Grizzlies will host Middle Georgia State in Senior Day action at 2:00 p.m. Prior to Sunday's game, Georgia Gwinnett will recognize its 11 seniors of the 2017 class, including Trevor Bradley, Abram Cartledge, Jean Figueroa, Jean Paul Rodriguez, Michael Royal, Tanner Shelton, Brady Shoppe, Angel Soto, Tyler Souris, Kyler Timmerman, and Nikolay Uherek.
