Eighth-Ranked Grizzlies Collect 30th Win of 2017 in 14-4 Rout of Point (Ga.)

The eighth-ranked Georgia Gwinnett baseball team picked up its third win in five days on Tuesday as the Grizzlies defeated Point (Ga.) in a 14-4 rout to pick up its 30th win of the 2017 season.

"We played five games in five days and came out with a 3-2 record against high-quality opponents," said GGC head coach Brad Stromdahl.  "Tomorrow, we will have a much-needed day off and then get ready on Thursday for this weekend's series with Auburn Montgomery.  Everyone contributed to today's win, and I'm proud of each person's individual effort towards a win."

After two scoreless innings, the Grizzlies (30-15) jumped out a 4-0 lead in the top of the third inning with two, two-run singles by first baseman Alex Garland and center fielder Chris Jones.

Georgia Gwinnett struck again in the fourth and fifth innings with two runs in each frame to push its gap to 8-0 over Point (24-16).  In the fourth, catcher Jean Paul Rodriguez made it 5-0 with a solo home run to center while an RBI-double by right fielder Jean Figueroa increased the Grizzlies' gap to 6-0.  An inning later, shortstop Marcus McCorkle lifted an RBI-single to shallow center while pinch hitter Brady Shoppe drove in GGC's eighth run with an RBI-double to left-center.

While the Grizzlies added a ninth run in the sixth off an RBI-double by third baseman Brandon Frazier, Point plated its first of four runs in the contest in the bottom of the eighth on a grounder to third by first baseman Christian Cabral.

The Grizzlies responded with a five-run frame in the top of the ninth, extending their lead to 14-1.  Senior Trevor Bradley made it 11-1 with a two-run double to right-center.  Shortly after, Shoppe collected his second RBI hit of the game with an RBI-double to right, making it 12-1.  Later in the inning, left fielder Kade Carrigan and pinch hitter Ryan Lark concluded GGC's scoring barrage with RBI-hits to increase the Grizzly lead to 14-1.

While Point cut GGC's gap to 14-4 in the bottom of the ninth with a three-run home run by catcher Juan Reyes, the Skyhawks could not overcome Georgia Gwinnett's early lead as junior Nick Andrews closed out the contest for GGC's 30th win of the season.

Bradley (5-3) led the Grizzlies in the 14-4 victory as the right-hander threw six shutout innings of work, scattering five hits while striking out six.  Point's Sahir Fersobe (1-3) was credited with the loss, allowing six earned runs on eight hits in 3.1 innings of work.

Georgia Gwinnett returns home to the Grizzly Baseball Complex on Friday, April 14 where the Grizzlies welcome NCAA Division II foe Auburn Montgomery to Lawrenceville for the first contest of a two-game weekend series.  First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m.
