Georgia Gwinnett's fifth-ranked baseball team pushed its winning streak to seven games on Saturday as the Grizzlies swept Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) in doubleheader action to improve to 7-3 on the season.
In game one, the Grizzlies beat the Lynx 6-0, receiving a one-hit pitching performance by starter Trevor Bradley. Bradley carried a no-hitter into the sixth before an infield bunt single by Pat Gaul broke up the hitless game for the Lynx.
Georgia Gwinnett continued its offensive assault in the series finale, overpowering Lindenwood-Belleville (0-4) to the tune of a 17-3 victory in game two.
"Today, we picked up our first series victory of the season, and it's great to have that under our belt," stated GGC head coach Brad Stromdahl. "The guys continue to grow and are learning with each game. I'm proud of their effort this weekend. We have a heavyweight battle next week against Lindsey Wilson and look forward to the opportunity it brings."
GGC jumped out the 3-0 advantage in game one with a three-run first inning. Right fielder Jean Figueroa scored GGC's first run of the day on a steal attempt at third that the Lynx catcher overthrew, sailing the ball into left field. Second baseman Marcus McCorkle made it 2-0 with an RBI-single to right and later scored on a double steal to make it 3-0.
In the fourth, McCorkle launched his second career home run over the left field fence to push the lead to 4-0. In the bottom of the fifth, Figueroa would also go yard as the Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, native connected for his second home run of the season. Up 5-0 in the fifth, another wild throw by the Lynx would plate GGC's sixth and final run of the contest, leading to the 6-0 victory.
Bradley (2-0) received the win, striking out six of the 22 batters he faced. The right-hander surrendered just one hit and two walks in seven innings of work. Lindenwood-Belleville's Jonathan Steiner received the loss, surrendering six runs, three unearned, on five hits.
In game two, the Grizzlies used 11 hits to score 17 runs to defeat Lindenwood-Belleville 17-3. Georgia Gwinnett scored at least one run in the first six innings of action, scoring five at its height in the fifth inning.
GGC starter Tyler Souris (1-0) picked up his first victory of the 2017 season in his third start. The Bradenton, Fla., native surrendered just three runs on four hits, striking out three of the 18 batters he faced. Stone Kelly and Taylor Folsom also provided an inning each of scoreless relief.
In game two, first baseman Brady Hamilton compiled a 2-for-2 performance at the plate, driving in two runs while scoring on three occasions. Hamilton connected for his third home run of the season in the bottom of the first, lifting a two-run shot over the left field fence.
Next up for the Grizzlies is a three-game series with No. 6 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) starting on Friday, Feb. 17. GGC will be out for revenge as the Grizzlies' 2016 season came to an end at the hands' of the Blue Raiders. Pregame coverage on the Grizzly Digital Network with Matt Mahony, the Voice of the Grizzlies, will begin at 2:45 p.m. with first pitch taking place at 3:00 p.m.
