Behind 20 runs and an individual 5-for-7 performance by right fielder Jean Figueroa, the No. 5 Georgia Gwinnett baseball team swept its doubleheader against Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) on Friday, defeating the Lynx 10-1 in game one while shutting out the visitors 10-0 in a seven-inning run-rule contest in the nightcap of the twin bill.

The Grizzlies (5-3) now own a four-game winning streak and are looking to use that momentum to turn their season around.

"Our guys are starting to buy into our process each day," stated GGC head coach Brad Stromdahl.  "Today, we had a great offensive showing at the plate, but more importantly, we received quality performances from our starting pitchers.  We mixed up the batting order and tried some new things today.  I'm excited to see that the guys are showing signs of growth each day and look forward to the next challenge ahead."

In game one, the Grizzlies used a four-run rally in the second inning to give starting pitcher Nikolay Uherek a 4-0 lead.  An RBI-single by shortstop Trevor Bradley and a two-RBI double by center fielder Josh Black propelled the Grizzly offense in the opening innings.

The Lynx (0-2) scored their lone run of the day in the top of the sixth as Pat Gaul scored on a wild throw while attempting to steal third base.

Holding a 6-1 lead heading into the eighth, the Grizzlies would push four more insurance runs across the plate to lead to the 10-1 victory.  Left fielder Rodney Tennie drove in two Grizzlies with a double down the right field line.  Tennie would later score on an infield grounder hit by third baseman Angel Soto.  The 10th and final run of the opening game was the product of an RBI-double by pinch-hitter Brandon Frazier.

GGC's Uherek (1-1) picked up his first win of 2017, providing the Grizzlies with seven innings of two-hit work.  The right-hander struck out nine of the 23 batters he faced, surrendering just one run and four walks.  Lindenwood-Belleville's Nick Hummel (0-1) received the loss.

In the nightcap, the Grizzlies shutout Lindenwood-Belleville in a 10-0 victory in seven innings of play.  Freshman Myles Smith (1-1) pitched six innings of shutout ball, striking out three.  The left-hander allowed just six hits against 20 batters.

An eight-run first inning gave Georgia Gwinnett a sizeable advantage over the Lynx, propelling the Grizzlies to the 10-0 win.  An RBI-double by first baseman Brady Hamilton started the scoring rally.  Tennie would continue the action with an infield bunt, RBI-single to give GGC the 2-0 lead.  Soto made it 5-0 with a two-RBI double before the Lynx committed two errors and two wild pitches in the inning, aiding the Grizzlies' offense to push their lead to 8-0.

In the bottom of the sixth, catcher Ryan Lark would make it 9-0 with an RBI-single to center.  Second baseman Marcus McCorkle drove in the finally Grizzly run of the day with a sacrifice fly to deep right field, ending the GGC showing with a 10-0 lead and eventual victory.

Figueroa was a key contributor to GGC's two victories.  The Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, native batted in the leadoff spot for the first time in his collegiate career and combined for a 5-for-7 output, scoring twice while driving in a run.

As a unit, the Grizzlies are just five wins away from reaching the 200-wins mark in just their fifth year of competition.

Georgia Gwinnett and Lindenwood-Belleville square off again tomorrow, wrapping up their four-game set.  First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader against the Lynx is set for 12:00 p.m. with pregame coverage beginning at 11:45 a.m. on the Grizzly Digital Network.
