Box Score Thirty-six seconds is all it took for the Georgia Gwinnett men's soccer team to score the Golden Goal in its 2-1 double overtime victory over Martin Methodist (Tenn.) on Saturday afternoon.
While regulation ended in a 1-1 draw, the Grizzlies were propelled to victory on Jumar Oakley's goal in the 101st minute of play to collect their fourth win of the 2016 season.
"We faced some extreme temperatures today and battled through them to create a collective winning effort," stated GGC head coach Steve DeCou. "We went up really early and let them back into the match midway through the first. I thought we did a great job staying focused, in position, and synced in the extra periods to pull out the win."
Senior midfielder Cameron St. Prix Mitchell gave the Grizzlies (4-3-2) the 1-0 advantage in the second minute of the match. St. Prix Mitchell received a cross from the left side of the pitch from Jon Conner and ripped a one-timer into the lower right-hand corner of the net to put the Grizzlies ahead.
Martin Methodist (0-6-3) landed the equalizer in the 21st minute when Jonathan Remond lifted an unassisted strike just past GGC goalkeeper Lewis Sharpe's left side.
Sharpe tallied six saves in the match, notching three key saves in the second half of play to keep the contest knotted at 1-1.
After the first 10-minute extra period, the Grizzlies took just 34 seconds to seal a 2-1 victory over the Redhawks. Oakley gathered a rebound off Herb Sevilla's shot attempt, which ricocheted off the Redhawk keeper, and ripped a blast to bottom left corner of the net.
DeCou concluded, "This week is a great opportunity for our guys to rest up, refuel, work on some things, and come out ready for a great match next weekend."
Georgia Gwinnett is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 1 when the Grizzlies host No. 24 Tennessee Wesleyan. First touch at the Grizzly Soccer Complex is set for 1:00 p.m.
