No. 8 Grizzlies Historic Streak Hits 11

The eighth-ranked Georgia Gwinnett baseball team continued its historic start to the 2016 season as the Grizzlies picked up their 11th straight victory on Friday, defeating Brewton-Parker (Ga.) 12-7.

"Tonight was grind," stated GGC head coach Brad Stromdahl.  "While we went up 5-0 in the first two innings of play, we got complacent and lost our focus for just a moment and had to regroup.  Our guys responded well to adjustments and, once again, connected with timely hits when it mattered most."

Georgia Gwinnett's opening inning had two key hits by the Grizzlies.  Designated hitter Marcus McCorkle ripped a two out, two-RBI triple to the right-center field gap to put the Grizzlies up 2-0.  Four pitches later, McCorkle scored on a seeing-eye single to left by third baseman Angel Soto.

Brewton-Parker (3-7) plated its first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth on a fielding error by Soto.  Facing a 5-1 Grizzly lead, the Barons' pitching held the Grizzlies scoreless until the seventh.  In the meantime, BPC put two more runs on the board in the bottom of sixth to cut GGC's lead to 5-3.

The Grizzlies battled back over the final three innings of play to outscore Brewton-Parker 7-1 en route to the 12-7 victory.

GGC's starting pitcher Tyler Oglesby went five innings, surrendering an unearned run on three hits en route to the win.  The right-hander struck out three of the batters he faced and did not record a walk.  BPC's Royce Grinaker (6.2 innings, 6 hits, 7 runs) received the loss for the Barons.

At the plate, GGC's McCorkle went 2-for-2, driving in four runs while scoring twice.  Center fielder Josh Merrigan went 3-for-6 while second baseman Jereid Woods went 2-for-5 on the afternoon.

The Grizzlies return to the diamond Saturday as they face Brewton-Parker in doubleheader action to wrap up the three-game series against the Barons.  First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.

No. 8 Georgia Gwinnett returns to the Grizzly Baseball Complex Friday, Feb. 26 as it hosts Lindenwood University-Belleville (Ill.) in doubleheader action.  First pitch from Lawrenceville is slated for 1:00 p.m.
