Grizzlies Defeat Montreat (N.C.) on the Road 3-2, Extend Four-Match Winning Streak

Box Score

The Georgia Gwinnett men's soccer team won its fourth match in-a-row on Saturday, defeating Montreat (N.C.) 3-2 on the road.

"I'm proud of the performance by the boys today," stated GGC head coach Steve DeCou.  "We played well and created a number of good chances, scoring some great goals.  We showed great fight and spirit today.  We'll enjoy tonight's win and prepare for Tuesday's showdown with Thomas."

The Grizzlies (7-3-2) scored first in the 15th minute when junior Jack Gurr connected with classmate Ellis Husband for the 1-0 advantage.

While the Grizzlies allowed the Cavaliers to score just before the intermission, Georgia Gwinnett regained the advantage just five minutes into the second half of play when Jumar Oakley scored his third goal of the season, putting GGC ahead 2-1.  Three minutes later, Samuel Sampaio Gomes increased the Grizzlies' lead to 3-1 with a blast to the lower right-hand corner of the net.

Montreat (6-6-1) managed to close the Grizzlies' advantage to one goal, 3-2, in the 85th minute with a score by Francisco Prado, but could not overcome GGC's early lead, sending the Grizzlies to the win column.

Georgia Gwinnett is back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 18 when the Grizzlies travel to Columbus, Ga., to face No. 4 Thomas (Ga.) at 6:00 p.m.  The neutral site match will take place at the Walden Soccer Complex on the Columbus State University campus.
