HARDEEVILLE, S.C. - After seeing its seven-game winning streak snapped by host USC Beaufort in the day's first game, the sixth-ranked Georgia Gwinnett baseball team bounced back with 18 hits in the second to grab a 13-10 victory and force a rubber game on Saturday at Richard Gray Baseball Complex.
Michael Hodorowski was the star of the day as the junior enjoyed a 3-for-4 outing in the first game, collecting half of GGC's hits in the contest, and then returned later in the day to go 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in.
"Michael did a really good job for us today," GGC Head Coach Brad Stromdahl said. "He had a good plate approach and did his best to try to keep us in the first game, but unfortunately we weren't able to make the comeback. The team came out strong in the second game to pick up the split, and I'm happy that we'll have an opportunity to get a series victory over a good USC Beaufort team tomorrow."
Jamie McKnight was the only other offensive standout for the Grizzlies (34-7) in the game, belting a pinch-hit home run, and pitcher Alex Roberts was pegged with the loss after giving up seven runs (one unearned) on eight hits. The senior right-hander struck out eight in the game over seven innings of work and dropped to 6-3 on the year.
USCB (26-14) recorded nine hits in the game, pushing across six runs over the first two frames before adding another four late to put it out of reach.
Ty Abbott, William Paschal and Ernesto Vazquez each put together three-hit outings in in the second game as the Grizzlies were able to score 12 of their 13 runs in the first two innings. Abbott was 3-for-6 with a pair of RBI, and Vazquez had a career day, ending 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBI.
Paschal, who finished 3-for-4, scored twice and the game marked the fourth in five that the junior out of Norcross collected at least three hits in a single game.
USCB, which registered 12 hits in the game, attempted a torrid comeback after finding themselves behind 12-2 in the early goings. The Sand Sharks scored nine runs off of GGC starter Tyler Oglesby and reliever Davis Adkins to pull within four runs in the bottom of the eighth.
Austin Smith conceded another in the frame before Andy Threatt and Christian Turnipseed combined to pick up the last four outs. Threatt was deemed the most effective reliever as he moved to 6-0 on the year, and Turnipseed earned his seventh save of the season, which tied Zeke McGranahan's single season record from a year ago.
GGC and USCB will meet again at 12 p.m. Saturday at Richard Gray Baseball Complex.
