LAWRENCEVILLE – The Georgia Gwinnett baseball program grabbed its first-ever No. 1 national ranking on Tuesday night, but the good news would stop there as the Grizzlies fell 16-5 to visiting Middle Georgia at Grizzly Baseball Complex to close out the 2015 regular season.
With the loss, GGC fell to 43-10 on the year.
The top ranking came just a week after GGC narrowly missed out on laying claim to the mantle. Grizzly men's tennis and women's tennis also maintained their No. 1 rankings on Tuesday, meaning that three of GGC's six athletic programs are currently considered the best in the country.
Following a special ceremony honoring GGC's senior class, the visiting Knights (17-32) drew first blood in the third before GGC would respond with three runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to grab the slim 4-3 edge.
From there, it would fall apart for the Grizzlies as Middle Georgia pushed 13 runs across in the ensuing three frames to take control of the game.
The GGC offense was led on the day by a 3-for-5 day from Ty Abbott, but on the whole, the Grizzly line-up was outhit by the visitors 15-11.
On the mound, 13 different players saw action for GGC, with Tyler Oglesby being dealt the loss to drop to 5-1 on the year.
