April 17, 2015

Box Score

TOUGALOO, Miss. - The sixth-ranked Georgia Gwinnett baseball team continued a very successful week on Friday afternoon, picking up a pair of seven-inning victories over Tougaloo to notch the program's 39th and 40th wins on the season.

"It was nice to come out and get a couple wins after dealing with the travel and some of the weather issues," GGC Head Coach Brad Stromdahl said. "Both Tyler Oglesby and Davis Adkins threw really well for us today, and the line-up did a good jobs of picking up the timely hits. I'm glad that we were able to get to 40 wins, and I'm looking forward to getting back out there tomorrow."

The Grizzlies are now 40-8 on the year and stand among just three teams nationally to reach the 40-win plateau. Tougaloo dropped to 5-32.

GGC, which recorded eight hits in each game, held the hosts to just three hits in a 7-5 game one victory before racking up 10 stolen bases en route to a 9-3 win in the day's second game.

Arsenio Watlington and Marcus McCorkle led the assault at both the plate and on the base paths as the duo combined for eight hits on the day. Watlington, a senior out of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, went 2-for-3 in each game, scoring a combined five times with four stolen bases, and McCorkle registered his first career home run on the way to finishing with five runs batted in.

Abbott, the nation's leader in RBI, collected four more and took his season total up to 72, which is eight clear of second place in the NAIA.

A McCorkle two-run triple and Abbott sacrifice fly brought home the day's first three runs as GGC grabbed the lead in the third inning of game one.

An error in the fifth further added to the total before hits from Jereid Woods and Abbott an inning later handed the Grizzlies a commanding 7-0 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth.

A two-out rally from the Bulldogs ultimately chased GGC starter Oglesby from the mound before reliever Casey Collins surrendered a three-run blast to Lige Mims Jr. to bring the hosts back within striking distance at 7-5.

Oglesby ended the day with three earned runs on one hit over 5.2 innings, and with the win, he moved to 5-0 on the year.

Christian Turnipseed took over in the seventh and retired the side in order to pick up his school-record eighth save of the season.

The Grizzlies were dealt an early deficit in game two as the Bulldogs scratched a run across in the opening stanza, but a ground ball from Abbott and an error in the third plated a pair as GGC grabbed the 2-1 lead.

McCorkles three-run homer highlighted a seven-run fifth as the Green and Gray seized control of the game for good.

Jeremy Holcomb got the start on the mound in game two, but it was Adkins who was credited with the win, moving to 4-1 on the season. The Cordele native gave up two runs on two hits and struck out four as GGC secured yet another series victory this season.

The two teams will meet once again on Saturday, and first pitch is slated for 11 a.m.
