LAWRENCEVILLE - Perhaps it was fitting on Friday evening as it was Jereid Woods who delivered in the bottom of the eighth, sending a triple to deep right to secure a 6-4 victory for the sixth-ranked Georgia Gwinnett baseball team over visiting Lindsey Wilson at Grizzly Baseball Complex to register the program's 100th victory.
Woods, a native of Zebulon, was the only Grizzly on the roster to take part in GGC's first-ever win, recording a hit and scoring against Voorhees on February 9, 2013. The junior infielder has been a regular in the line-up ever since, and he was certainly effective on Friday night, going 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in.
"It's great to go out and get the win," GGC Head Coach Brad Stromdahl said. "It was a really good team effort tonight, and we were able to get a win over a guy who really might be one of the better pitchers in the country. We stayed tight with them, and we had a really good pitching performance from all three of our guys. At the end of the day, a couple of balls fell our way, and it felt good to bounce back from last night."
In addition to being the program's 100th win, it also marked the 100th career win for Stromdahl.
GGC improved to 17-4 on the year, and the Blue Raiders, which are also receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 poll, fell to 9-7.
Two other Grizzlies had multiple-hit outings, led by a 3-for-4 night from Ty Abbott. Arsenio Watlington also impressed, finishing 2-for-2 with a score, and Ernesto Vazquez ended 1-for-4 with a three-run double.
Ryan Minteer got the start on the mound for the Green and Gray, and after seeing his run of 13.1 consecutive scoreless innings come to an end in the opening stanza, the junior out of Venetia, Pa., returned to form and ended the night with a career-best and school record-tying 11 strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work. He finished with four earned runs on six hits and walked just one.
The Grizzlies mounted a two-out rally in the third to get back into the game as back-to-back singles from Abbott and Kyler Timmerman cut the lead in half, and a William Paschal walk loaded the bases for Vazquez, who hammered a double into deep left to make it 4-2.
The Blue Raiders reclaimed a score in each of the ensuing two frames to tie things up and ultimately chase Minteer from the mound. Threatt responded well, tossing a scoreless 1.1 innings to keep things even heading into the bottom half of the eighth.
LWC starting pitcher Ryan Hartman allowed all six GGC runs on the night, striking out nine and walking a pair over 7.2 innings.
Paschal started the rally in the bottom of the eighth, earning a one-out walk, but it would be Michael Hodorowski and Woods who delivered with two-out hits to make it 6-4 and allow Stromdahl to hand the game off to closer Christian Turnipseed, who struck out the side to pick up his fourth save of the season.
Both teams will return to action on Saturday as Lindsey Wilson will take on Madonna at noon at Grizzly Baseball Complex, and the Green and Gray will follow up vs. Madonna at 3:30.
