AUGUSTA - The Grizzly line-up proved a major problem for Georgia Regents on Monday evening as fifth-ranked Georgia Gwinnett hammered out 15 hits en route to a 7-4 victory over the host Jaguars at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
With the win, the Grizzlies improved to 31-6 on the season, and GRU, which is the first NCAA Division II opponent that GGC has played this year, fell to 12-17.
William Paschal added his name to an ever-growing list of Grizzly players to tie the school's all-time hits record, going 4-for-5 at the plate, and both Ty Abbott and Kyler Timmerman continued their impressive campaigns as the duo combined to go 6-for-9 with four runs batted in and a pair of scores.
Abbott, a senior from Milton, has now reached base in all but two games this season.
Jeremy Holcomb made the start for the Green and Gray on the mound and allowed three earned runs through 4.2 innings before he ceded the mound to Austin Smith, who tossed 3.1 two-hit frames to earn his second victory of the season. Christian Turnipseed didn't allow a score in the ninth as he recorded his sixth save.
GGC drew first blood in the opening stanza as Marcus McCorkle walked and then an Abbott single moved him into scoring position before Timmerman grounded to cash in the run.
Doubles from McCorkle and Timmerman bookended an Abbott single to bring home two more in the third, and Michael Hodorowski came up with a two-out single later in the frame to make it 4-0.
Hodorowski ended 2-for-3 with two walks and two RBI.
A McCorkle groundout and Abbott sacrifice fly brought home two runs in the ensuing inning before the hosts broke through for three to cut the deficit in half after four.
GRU pushed another run across in the sixth, but Abbott would score on a Hodorowski single in the eighth to re-establish the three-run advantage and account for the final score.
GGC will return to action on Tuesday with a doubleheader against Thomas at Golden Park in Columbus, Ga.
