Baseball Picks Up Eighth Straight Win

March 2, 2015

Final Stats

LAWRENCEVILLE - Four Georgia Gwinnett pitchers combined to toss a two-hitter on Monday evening, exacting a bit of revenge over Truett-McConnell with a 6-1 decision over the visiting Bears at Grizzly Baseball Complex.

The win marked the eighth consecutive for the streaking Grizzlies, which have now won 13 of their last 14 games, and the team owns a 16-3 record for the season. TMC, the only team to beat GGC over that stretch, fell to 9-6.

Jeremy Holcomb got it going on the mound for the staff, allowing just two hits and an earned run over 4.2 innings, and reliever Andy Threatt picked up the victory with 2.1 perfect frames in his stead, striking out four in the process. Heath Durand made the trot from the mound for his Grizzly debut in the eighth, tossing 1.2 hitless innings, and Davis Adkins struck out the final batter of the game.

"I feel like we got snuck up on by this team last time, and we definitely needed to beat these guys tonight," Holcomb said. "I think I've done a little better my last two outings, but I need to go deeper in my appearances. This is something to build on for me, and it's all about working towards the end of the season. That's what it's all about."

Offensively, the Grizzlies pounded out 12 hits in the game, led by two-hit outings from Arsenio Watlington and Trey Haygood, both of whom also collected a pair of stolen bases. Eight other players also recorded a hit in the game, led by Kyler Timmerman's 1-for-2 evening with two walks, two runs and a run batted in.

GGC opened up the scoring with a Jamie McKnight two-run double in the third, and Jereid Woods touched home an inning later when TMC starter Jared Oliver balked to make it 3-0.

Oliver was pegged with the loss after tossing five innings and allowing four runs with 11 strikeouts.

Both teams would score a run in the fifth, but back-to-back two-out doubles from Timmerman and Jake Wright gave the Grizzlies a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh to put the game out of reach for the visitors from Cleveland, Ga.

GGC will return to action on Thursday with the first of a run of five games in four days, beginning with a match up at 5 p.m. against Madonna.

NOTES: Monday's win was the 99th in school history ... GGC is 64-18 all-time in home games ... The Grizzlies have a 33-11 all-time record in the month of March ... GGC is 26-24 all-time vs. Georgia schools.
