LAWRENCEVILLE - Davis Adkins put together his best outing of the season on Wednesday evening, but it was all for naught as the third-ranked Georgia Gwinnett baseball team fell 4-1 to visiting No. 24 Campbellsville at Grizzly Baseball Complex.
The game, which was added to the schedule on Wednesday afternoon after Campbellsville saw a previously scheduled game in Alabama cancelled due to rain, marked GGC's first game against a ranked opponent this season, and with the loss the Grizzlies fell to 20-5 on the year.
Campbellsville improved to 9-2.
Adkins, a junior out of Cordele, gave up an unearned run after he entered the game in the top of the second inning, and he proved nearly unflappable from there on out, allowing just four hits and striking out six over 7.2 innings of relief.
Alex Roberts got the start on the mound for the Green and Gray, and after a scoreless first, the senior loaded the bases in the second before being pulled for Adkins, who gave up a triple to clear the bases. An error ultimately cost GGC another run before a flyout and lineout brought an end to the frame.
After winning his first five starts of the year, Roberts picked up a second consecutive loss.
A two-out double by Jereid Woods in the fourth momentarily put the Grizzlies back in business, and a Brian Jacobs single cut the deficit to three. From there, the best scoring opportunity wouldn't arise until the eighth, but a fantastic defensive play from Tiger second baseman Miguel Solano-Espinoza that robbed Jamie McKnight of a would-be two-run single.
GGC would go down in order in the top of the ninth as Logan Truex, the fifth Tiger pitcher to see the mound Wednesday night, was credited with the save.
Woods ended the night 2-for-3 at the plate, and he joined William Paschal as the only other Grizzly player to record multiple hits for the day.
The Grizzlies will return to action on Saturday with a doubleheader against Rochester, set to begin at 1 p.m.
