LAWRENCEVILLE - It was yet another successful Saturday at Grizzly Baseball Complex as Georgia Gwinnett picked up a pair of victories over visiting Berea to secure a fifth consecutive series victory this season for the Grizzlies.
GGC, which now stands at 14-3 on the year, ran out to a 13-3 victory in the day's opening game before picking up a 7-3 decision in the second. The team has now won six consecutive games and 11 of its last 12. Dating back to the inaugural season in 2013, the Grizzlies have never lost a three- or four-game set in Lawrenceville with Berea marking the 13th such series.
The Grizzlies grabbed the series lead early behind another fantastic outing from junior right-hander Ryan Minteer. The Venetia, Pa., picked up from where he left off a week ago, tossing six innings while allowing just two hits and striking out seven. He's surrendered just one run on the season in 24 innings of work, and he's now pitched 13.1 consecutive innings without giving up a run.
"Ryan had a great game and got us off to the kind of start we needed to open up this series," GGC Head Coach Brad Stromdahl said. "When you have a guy like that on the mound that is so consistent, the team is going to play better behind him because they all know they have a chance when he's pitching. He brings a competitive edge for us, and we're going to have a chance to win any time that he's on the mound for us."
Three different Grizzly hitters recorded multiple hits in the contest as the team ran off all 13 of its runs before the sixth inning, including a nine-run fourth and fifth frames that saw 20 hitters walk to the plate. Kyler Timmerman, the reigning A.I.I. Player of the Week, led the assault with a 3-for-4 outing with two runs batted in, and both Brian Jacobs and Trey Haygood went 2-for-2, with the latter also chipping in three scores, three RBI and a pair of stolen bases.
"We did a really good job at putting the ball in play again today, and that's what we want," Stromdahl said. "I think we squared balls up all day long, and some of them were just hit right at people and we took advantage of some of their mistakes. We did what we were supposed to do and played our kind of baseball. That's why we won."
Arsenio Watlington went 1-for-4, but swiped his nation-leading 20th and 21st bases of the season en route to touching home four times.
The second game would prove more dramatic as Alex Roberts went for his fifth victory in five starts on the mound. It was not without adversity for the senior as a three-run fourth briefly saw the Grizzlies fall behind, but a Watlington single and a successful squeeze play by Haygood put GGC ahead once more in the bottom half of the inning, this time for good.
Haygood had another two-hit showing in the game, picking up a pair of scores and another stolen base to lead the offense. Ty Abbott ended 1-for-5, pushing another two runs across with a single in the sixth to effectively put the game out of reach for the visitors from Kentucky.
Roberts finished the day with three earned runs on five hits over six innings, striking out six in the process. Tyler Oglesby and Christian Turnipseed closed the door, limiting the Mountaineers to just one hit over the final three frames.
GGC will go for a third consecutive sweep on Sunday at Grizzly Baseball Complex, and first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
NOTES: GGC is 62-18 all-time in home games ... The Grizzlies have a 34-8 all-time record in the month of February ... GGC has never lost a three- or four-game home series ... This weekend marks the first-ever series for the Grizzlies vs. a school from the state of Kentucky.
