Game One Box Score | Game Two Box Score
LAWRENCEVILLE - Alex Roberts and Ryan Minteer combined for a spectacular 13 innings over a pair of games on Saturday evening as the sixth-ranked Georgia Gwinnett baseball team returned to its winning ways with a pair of one-sided victories over visiting Fisher as Grizzly Baseball Complex.
Roberts took a no-hitter into the sixth inning in game one, helping the Grizzlies to a 16-1 victory, and Minteer allowed just two hits over seven innings en route to a 9-0 GGC decision in the second game. The Green and Gray are now 10-3 on the season, and Fisher, which is playing in its first weekend of the season, dropped to 0-4.
"Roberts and Minteer really did well today," GGC Head Coach Brad Stromdahl said. "They did exactly what we want them to do. They kept the ball in the zone and went pretty deep in the game. Those two guys just did a great job for us."
Roberts, who has now won all four of his starts this season, would leave the mound after the sixth, surrendering his first hit of the game with just one out remaining in the frame. The senior out of Dalton finished with one unearned run as well as eight strikeouts to just one walk.
"This is definitely my best start of the season, but we had a lot of good plays defensively that helped me out," Roberts said. "I felt pretty comfortable with all my pitches today, and it really made it easy for me out there."
Offensively, the Grizzlies tallied 18 hits off five different Falcon pitchers, but it was Victor Mendez who was pegged with the loss after allowing seven runs and walking six in the game's first two-plus innings. Ty Abbott, Kyler Timmerman and Jake Wright led the assault on the FC arms, combining to go 10-for-16 with eight runs batted in and five scores.
"I was very pleased with the offense and the way they stayed patient today," Stromdahl said. "We finished the day with 20 walks, and we can put a lot of pressure on the defense when we get on base. Today was just a very productive day for us overall."
GGC stole 12 bases in the first game and another five in the second.
In all, 10 different Grizzlies recorded at least one hit, with Timmerman becoming the third different player this season to tie the school's single-game hits record with four.
"I'm just seeing the ball really well right now, and I'm not trying to do too much," Timmerman said. "We knew we had to get two wins after losing earlier this week, and it was good to come out and do well today. We just have to stay up for tomorrow's game and keep doing all the little things."
Jereid Woods was the first to draw blood, walking and later scoring on an Abbott triple in the first. The first of four FC errors brought home another run an inning later as the Grizzlies grabbed the early 2-0 edge.
GGC grabbed control of the game in the third as Jake Wright capped streak of four straight batters, reaching base safely with a double down the right field line. The Grizzlies went on to score seven times in the frame on five hits and another Falcon error to grab a 9-0 lead.
The two sides traded a score over the fifth and sixth innings, but it was a six-run eighth on seven hits that brought about the lopsided scoreline.
Minteer put together a second straight impressive showing in game two, as he too struck out eight hitters en route to finishing the game with two hits allowed and just one walk over seven innings of work. Tyler Oglesby and Davis Adkins took it the rest of the way, recording the final six outs to give GGC its first shutout of the season.
"I was locating my fastball really well all game," Minteer said of his performance. "I'm feeling extremely comfortable on the mound right now, especially with the way that the defense has played over the last two games that I've pitched. They back me up, and I do my best to try to take care of them too."
At the plate, Abbott continued his strong day as he was the only player on either team to record multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with a walk and a pair of RBI. Eight other Grizzlies recorded a hit and the team combined for eight walks.
Brian Jacobs brought the game's opening tallies home with a two-run second-inning single, and a Timmerman sacrifice fly and Amauris Santana wild pitch in the third doubled the advantage.
A Marcus McCorkle triple in the fifth made the score 5-0 as Santana was chased from the mound for his first loss of the season. Two more triples an inning later tacked another on, and a three-run sixth rounded out the game's scoring as GGC secured a fourth consecutive series victory to open up the season.
The Grizzlies will return to action on Sunday with another meeting with Fisher and first pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
